This Hilarious Star Was Almost Cast As Elaine Benes On ‘Seinfeld’

"We liked her a lot"

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Julia Louis-Dreyfus debating who was “sponge-worthy” and coining a spectacular dance move on the hit sitcom Seinfeld.

But co-creator and star Jerry Seinfeld has revealed a number of other performers were considered for the iconic role before they found Dreyfus.

In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Seinfeld explained Megan Mullally—known for her scene-stealing role as Karen Walker on Will & Grace—was considered for the Elaine part.

“You know who was very close was Megan Mullally. We liked her a lot,” he told Howard Stern. “But [then] Julia came in.”

Seinfeld also explained that comedian and actress Rosie O’Donnell auditioned for the role but wasn’t quite right.

After ending his hit show in 1998, the comedian has been flooded with offers to revive it.

“I have been approached with astronomical numbers by certain large entertainment entities to bring it back,” Seinfeld said. “You can only make it worse.”

We’ll just have to make do with endless re-runs of the show, then.
