Over the weekend, it was reported that Emilia Wickstead, one of Kate Middleton’s favourite designers, claimed Meghan Markle’s wedding dress was copied from one of her designs.

In a damning article, the Daily Mail alleged the London-based designer said: “Her dress is identical to one of our dresses,” before continuing on to criticise the fit of the dress and even Markle’s wedding hairstyle.

Naturally, people flocked to Clare Waight Keller’s defence, saying Markle’s Givenchy gown was a classic design – that it was the details on the veil and silk which made it original – and noting that many of the French fashion house’s most iconic wedding dresses over the years were of a similar style and shape.

Now, Wickstead has released a statement, denying ever making the comments about the royal wedding dress and saying she is “extremely saddened” by the reports.

“I am extremely saddened by commentary that has appeared in the press and on-line over the past few days,” the post on Instagram reads.

“Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex looked absolutely beautiful on her wedding day and I have the utmost admiration and respect for her.

I do not think that her wedding dress was a copy of any of our designs. I have the greatest respect for Clare Waight Keller and the House of Givenchy – a huge source of inspiration to me.

I wish Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a wonderful, happy and love filled life together.”
