Emma Watson Compared Taylor Swift to Jo March In ‘Little Women’

And the parallel is eerily accurate

Actress Emma Watson has just coined Taylor Swift the modern-day version of Little Women’s Jo March and her reasoning is fairly accurate. While on the red carpet for the film’s New York premiere, Watson compared Swift’s ongoing copyright battle with Scooter Braun‘s Big Machine to the moment that Jo asks for the copyrights to the novel she wrote.

“It’s about believing in yourself and knowing your worth and owning your worth,” Watson told Variety.

“Right now, the Taylor Swift situation is a great example of, you know, you’re young and you’re talented and someone wants to buy your work, but having ownership at the end of the day is super, super important because you don’t know what someone’s going to decide to do with that.”

She also compared both situations to the game of Monopoly. “I think people undervalue ownership,” Watson adds. “You know when you play Monopoly and you have a decision and you want to own something or get cash fast. The way to win Monopoly, everyone, is to own stuff. I’m just saying.”

Who knew Emma Watson had a hidden talent for referencing perfect analogies?

The feud first began when Swift discovered that Scooter Braun (best known for being Justin Bieber’s manager) had acquired Big Machine Label Group – giving him ownership of her music catalogue, including all her albums and masters. Penning an open letter on her Tumblr page, the Lover singer also called out Scott Borchetta, Big Machine’s CEO and founder, accusing him of taking advantage of her toward the end of their working relationship.

After months of back-and-forth public (and private) discussion between the two parties, Braun issued his first personal statement on Instagram in late November, begging Swift to have an “open discussion” with him about how to resolve this feud.

Despite the ongoing turmoil, there’s no denying that Taylor Swift has had one amazing year. Recently surpassing Michael Jackson as the most awarded artist in American Music Award history, we can’t wait to see what 2020 has in store for the popstar!
