Facebook Bans Swedish Breast Cancer Awareness Ad For Being ‘Offensive’

We don't see it...

A Swedish Cancer Society ad has been pulled down from Facebook due to containing content that was deemed ‘offensive’.

The ad contained information about how to check for breast cancer, and featured cartoons with circular breasts.

The Facebook page received a message from Facebook explaining the reasoning for their choice: “Your ad cannot market sex products or services nor adults products or services.”

This led to the Swedish Cancer Society writing an open letter to Facebook on their website.

We understand that you have to have rules about the content published on your platform. But you also must understand that one of our main tasks is to disseminate important information about cancer – in this case breast cancer,” they wrote.

They added that the ad “cannot possibly offend you, or anyone. Now we can continue to spread our important breast school without upsetting you.”

TIME reports that Facebook have since released a statement accepting the error and apologising.

“We’re very sorry, our team processes millions of advertising images each week, and in some instances we incorrectly prohibit ads. This image does not violate our ad policies. We apologize for the error and have let the advertiser know we are approving their ads,” it read.
