The family of NSW school teacher and bride-to-be Stephanie Scott, who was raped and murdered by a cleaner in 2015, are suing the state government.
Ms Scott, 26, was killed at Leeton High School in the Riverina on Easter Sunday, 2015, by school cleaner Vincent Stanford.
The beloved teacher had gone into school that day to prepare lessons for a relief teacher while she was away for two weeks on honeymoon, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
When Ms Scott saw Stanford in a corridor, he grabbed her from behind and dragged her into a storeroom. In a police interview, the cleaner said he had beaten her 30-40 times and stabbed her in the neck with a knife.
Ms Scott’s body was discovered burned dumped in a national park 70km away from the school.
According to AAP, the legal claims against the NSW government are believed to have been filed on behalf of Ms Scott’s relatives. The NSW Department of Education was reportedly not approached before proceedings commenced and has declined to comment.
“The department is aware the circumstances resulting in these proceedings are sensitive and all efforts will be made to respond to the claims appropriately,” a department spokesman said.
Stanford is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted for murder in 2016.
