Fashion is getting political (and feminist!) at Fashion Week

Designers are taking a stand

The A/W 2017 edition of New York Fashion Week will go down in history – and not because of the clothes (although they are, for the most part, divine).

While designers have historically used the runway as a platform to voice frustrations with the politics of the day, never before has the message been so prevalent – not to mention crystal clear.

Taking on Trump (particularly his stance on immigration and attitude towards women), the political statements have ranged from the subtle (The Row stitched the word ‘hope’ on the cuffs of crisp white shirts) to the sublime (Raf Simons blasting David Bowie’s ‘This Is Not America’ during his Calvin Klein show).

5. Christian Siriano

6. Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger sent models down the runway with white bandanas tied around their wrists – a symbol of unity, solidarity and inclusivity as part of Business of Fashion’s #TiedTogether movement. Expect to see more white bandanas on and off the runway as Fashion Week goes on.
