Voluminous sleeves, bohemian vibes and head-to-toe colour peppered the London and New York seasonal collection shows; offering autumnal ensemble inspiration for Australian racegoers.

Here’s our edit of the upcoming autumn trends to translate for the track.

Monochrome

Pull out your Pantone colour wheel because single-hued styling is an odds-on favourite for autumn. Designers collectively championed monochrome dressing on the New York and London runways, and with accessories an absolute must on the track there are plenty of opportunities to layer and combine different tones and textures of the same colourway. Add Marc Jacobs, Aliette, Sally LaPointe and Carolina Herrera’s runway looks to your seasonal racewear mood board. And don’t forget to swap out the colour with elegant black and white for Royal Randwick’s The Championships Day 1 on April 4.

The balloon sleeve

Long sleeves are traditionally a must for autumn racewear, and the New York and London fall 2020 runways offered a smorgasbord of appropriate designs. Exaggerated shoulders and balloon sleeves made cameos on dozens of runways including Jason Wu, Carolina Herrera, Gabriella Hearst, Zimmermann and Emilia Wickstead. Waisted styles and shorter hemlines or belted trousers help to balance this dramatic silhouette, which we predict will be a major trend at next month’s ATC Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Modern bohemian

Traditional racewear’s unlikeliest of bedfellows has received a luxury overhaul this season, with pieces by the likes of Zimmermann and Anna Sui proving ideal trackside choices for fall.

Think rich artisanal and artistic prints paired with velvet detailing and dreamy frills, finished with a felt fedora and heeled, lace-up boots.

Embellished headpieces

Sequins have always been a sticking point among racewear purists, but when incorporated into felt and velvet hats and headbands, the result can be showstopping. Look to the Libertine and Adeam runways for embellished millinery inspo. Want to push the millinery boundaries? Try an embellished beanie, as seen at Erdem.

The coat dress

It’s an item adored by The Duchess of Cambridge – the unrivalled queen of trackside dressing, and a failsafe foundation for autumn race-day ensembles.

Seen at Carolina Herrera, Adeam, Prabal Gurung and Emilia Wickstead, the long-sleeved, conservative style is ideal for cooler carnival days. For total drama, opt for a bold hue and style back with a dramatic headpiece.

Flashback

From the Roaring (19)20s to mid-century style icons, the New York and London runways offered a journey back through fashion’s pioneering eras of fashion.

Erdem celebrated the new decade, incorporating flapper-era pin-curled hair and art deco accoutrements into their signature floral designs, Rodarte and Marc Jacobs offered up classic, ladylike styles inspired by the 40s, 50s and 80s.

Embrace the retro revival on the track via vintage headpieces such as pillbox hats, delicate flocked headbands and feminine, belted silhouettes.
