Wear sunglasses at night. Such is the directive of Balenciaga, who unveiled its pre-summer 2021 via a short film-cum-music video shot on the dimly lit streets of Paris. Models pound the pavements in androgynous suits, glittery but grungy gowns, stompy boots, double denim and dark shades, while lip-syncing to the 1980s electropop anthem โSunglasses at Nightโ.
Thereโs a sense of wit and irony in the stylingโas weโve come to expect from the maisonโwith oversized everything and casual sweatsuits teamed with decadent jewels.
But beyond the fun and frivolity, eco-conscious design is the star. More than 90 per cent of materials in the collection are either certified sustainable or upcycled, and 100 per cent of the print bases have sustainable certifications. Plus the house continues to hero non-gendered clothingโunisex jeans, coats and hoodiesโcool enough for a music video, but also a harbinger of the future of fashion.
