If your idea of a great handbag is less look at me and more look closer, Cartier has just made a seriously compelling case for your next investment. The new Clash de Cartier bag is sculptural, polished and finished with one small detail that gives the otherwise minimalist silhouette its signature edge.
The clue is in the name. Borrowing its distinctive fastening from the Clash de Cartier jewellery collection, the bag features a stud that twists to open and close the top. It’s a satisfyingly simple piece of engineering. Leave it open and the silhouette feels relaxed and effortless; twist the stud into place and the shape becomes more defined and structured.
Visually, the design is pared back, with clean lines and an architectural shape inspired by an envelope. The fastening subtly defines the bag on either side of the handle, while the absence of excessive hardware lets the leather and silhouette do the talking.
And there’s plenty to admire there. Made in Cartier’s workshops in Florence, the bag is crafted from exceptionally fine leather with a natural grain and tactile finish. It’s designed to develop a patina over time, meaning it should only become more beautiful – and more personal – with wear. Meanwhile, the colour palette keeps things equally sophisticated. The bag is available in black, caramel and Cartier’s signature burgundy (our favourite and a shade with its own fashion history, having been introduced as an official Pantone colour in the 1970s alongside the Must de Cartier collection).
Naturally, the bag is super versatile. Designed to be carried by hand, worn on the arm or slung over the shoulder, it’s intended to move between the everyday and the dressed-up without requiring an outfit change. According to Marlin Yuson, Creative Director of Accessories and Leather Goods, the idea was to create “an elegant, sleek fastening system” that could shift the bag between casual and tailored.
