After nearly three decades at the creative helm of Versace, Donatella Versace is passing the torch. The iconic Italian fashion house has announced that Dario Vitale will step in as the new Chief Creative Officer, marking the dawn of a new era for one of fashion’s most legendary brands.

Donatella, who took over the brand in 1997 following the tragic passing of her brother, Gianni Versace, will transition into the role of Chief Brand Ambassador. In this new position, she will focus on the house’s global presence, philanthropy, and its connection to the next generation of Versace devotees.

“Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes,” said Donatella in a statement shared by Capri Holdings.

“I want to thank my incredible design team and all the employees at Versace that I have had the privilege of working with for over three decades. It has been the greatest honour of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity. In my new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, I will remain Versace’s most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.”

Who Is Dario Vitale?

While Vitale’s name may not yet be as widely known as Donatella’s, his industry pedigree is undeniable. Formerly the design and image director at Miu Miu, Vitale has built a career shaping the visual identity of some of fashion’s most coveted brands. His previous stints at Bottega Veneta and Dsquared2 further cement his reputation as a creative force with an eye for contemporary luxury.

Taking on the Versace legacy is no small feat. The brand is synonymous with maximalist glamour, sharp tailoring, and a bold sensuality that has defined red carpets and pop culture moments for decades. Yet, if Vitale’s past work is any indication, he’s more than ready to balance that signature opulence with a modern vision that speaks to today’s fashion audience.

“I am truly honored to join Versace as the Chief Creative Officer and to be a part of this special and powerful fashion luxury House created by Gianni and Donatella,” Vitale added.

“It is a privilege to contribute to the future growth of Versace and its global impact through my vision, expertise and dedication.”

What This Means For Versace’s Future

Vitale’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the brand. Versace’s parent company, Capri Holdings, has been the subject of industry whispers regarding potential strategic moves – including speculation about a sale that could see Versace become part of the Prada Group. With such seismic shifts in the luxury fashion landscape, all eyes will be on Vitale to see how he reinterprets the house’s legacy while keeping it relevant for the future.

Donatella, meanwhile, remains the beating heart of the Versace brand. Her shift into a global ambassador role ensures that her influence will continue to shape the house’s narrative, even as a new creative lead takes charge.

With Dario Vitale at the creative helm of Versace, expect to see a fresh take on the house’s signature codes—perhaps a new exploration of power dressing, a refined approach to sex appeal, or a reinvention of the brand’s iconic Medusa logo for the next generation. One thing is certain: the Versace woman will always be front and centre, exuding confidence, sensuality, and undeniable glamour.
