I Searched Everywhere For The Perfect Denim Maxi Skirt – Here It Is

The denim maxi skirt is your shortcut to effortless chic

I like to think of myself as a classic dresser, unperturbed by trends. Only, who am I kidding? I work in fashion. I love a trend.

The minute I find a trend I think might suit me, I’m all in. Which is why if you walked into my wardrobe right now, you’d find a selection of denim maxi skirts.

In the world of fashion, the denim maxi skirt – a closet staple which first made its way into our lives in the 70s as a way to upcycle old denim jeans – has made a strong comeback. As in, everyone is wearing them. Back in the 90s, our friends J.Lo and Britney made denim maxis cool again.

And now, you have Gigi Hadid rocking it with a crop top and heels (side note – as a woman in her 40s, this is sadly not how I wear it, but Gigi looks incredible).

Whether paired with a crisp white shirt or a tee, this staple item is your shortcut to effortless chic. And in an age of self-expression where anything goes, the denim maxi might just be the most versatile piece in your wardrobe right now (yes, it’s on par with jeans).

The thing is, not all denim maxi skirts were created equal. Far from it. And in my quest to find the perfect denim maxi skirt, I searched far and wide.

I made some mistakes, which are perfectly normal when you’re attempting to navigate a new trend. I went for styles which had a long slit up the front (too leggy for me, and they rode up when I sat down). I tried tighter styles, which didn’t feel comfortable. In the end, I found my dream denim skirt.

Ok, drumroll. The winner is: Aje’s ‘Belmond’ denim midi skirt. It’s a midi but it’s basically a maxi. It does the same job. I love the high waisted fit-and-flare silhouette, the feminine feel and the gold sculptural buttons down the front. It’s back in stock right now, but always sells out.

The Belmond is the kind of piece you wear year-round and the perfect item for transitional dressing. In summer, I wear it with tees and tank tops, and for work, I’ll add a blazer over the top. Winter? Easy – just add a turtleneck and boots. You can quite literally style it with absolutely anything. Sneakers. Ballet flats. Heels. Like I said, anything goes. Ultimately, it plays the role of jeans, only it’s more girly, which I love.

We got along so well, I also bought the Belmond in white.
