That are fast becoming a wardrobe staple…

Barbiecore, Y2K fashion and the resurgence of indie sleeze… these are just some of the brazen style aesthetics that have exploded on the fashion scene in recent years.

As summer sneaks up on us (it’ll be here faster than you can say ‘beach’), we’re readying ourselves for a new wave of trends that speak to the season.

From celebrity-approved styles to pieces fit for the balmy Australian weather, these trends aren’t afraid to push boundaries and reinterpret traditional ways of dressing.

1. Slinky chains

Chain bag
Trend alert: Chain-embellished bags, featuring tough hardware to balance a soft silhouette.

The chain belt once reigned supreme in the ‘90s, but in 2022 it’s being slung around waists and across handbags. Spot delicate gold chains on the beach and glinting under the sun, worn on bare hips to add shiny detail to a bikini set.

Or adopt a chain-embellished bag as your accessory for the season—paying tribute to grunge-inspired styles. Above, the gunmetal silver-tone links balance out the feminine silhouette of the new ‘Jules’ leather chain-embellished bag, from the both X CHARLES & KEITH collection.

2. Crochet dresses

Light, textural, and often hand-made, the crochet dress is set to become a summer staple. Wear it as a coverup at the beach, or take it to the next level with strappy heels for a Sunday soiree. Fringing, knotting, and beadwork add detail to this net-like macrame style.

3. Platform loafers

Loafers
The urban-chic ‘Jules’ platform buckled loafers are a collaboration between fashion house CHARLES & KEITH and Paris-based independent footwear brand both.

The chunky loafer is, without a doubt, the shoe du jour. It takes a classic shape and adds visual weight, making it the perfect option to add height without relying on heels.

After all, the oversized silhouettes currently doing the rounds (think boyfriend button-ups and large shoulders) call for a hefty shoe to seal the look. Take the new platform loafer from fashion house CHARLES & KEITH, for instance.

Pictured above, the larger-than-life silhouette gives off a grunge aesthetic, while the kintsugi-inspired pattern adds a feminine touch. Mark our words: These chunky loafers are set to become the fashion set’s new stomping ground.

4. Vests

The warmer months are all about laidback living, requiring clothes that are easy to wear and layer. As such, summer in the workplace sees the rise of relaxed suiting and versatile vests. Championed by style icon Emma Chamberlain (see above), vests are perfect for wearing over a crisp white tee, or on its own for a clean, carefree look.

5. Parachute pants

This celebrity-approved trend has been worn by the likes of Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber. The voluminous, low-slung trousers are best styled with a tank top or cropped shirt, making them a comfortable choice for the holiday season.

Characteristic of the gorpcore aesthetic (a microtrend of utilitarian, practical, outdoors-inspired ensembles), parachute pants are the epitome of off-duty style — redefining the term ‘camping chic’.
