When Carrie Bradshaw stepped out onto the New York sidewalk with a Fendi Baguette slung casually under her arm, women the world over fell instantly in love. The bag, inspired in shape by a French breadstick, went on to sell more than a million units.
Now, re-imagined in fresh prints and hot hues, the cult piece is back to entice a whole new generation of fashion followers and style-setters. Style-setters like Monica Russell, fashion editor of marie claire, who hand-picked the bag for the latest episode of The Drop. In the weekly video series, marie claire’s style experts reveal the just-released, lust-have items you need to know about.
“This is a piece I’d die to own!” says Monica, clutching a plush yellow velvet version of the noughties It-bag. “It’s an investment piece that will not date, it will be something you can pass down to your children.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, the house’s legendary creative director of accessories, who wanted to blend classic and contemporary design. “We like change, but there’s always a bit of nostalgia.”
