Three Lip Looks For The Festive Season

Get updated

With the festive season upon us, now is your moment to experiment with lip looks that pack a real statement. From matt nudes to poppy pinks, you’re bound to find a favourite.

Pop of pink

To make a punchy pink work, toughen it up with a strong eye. “We used a waterproof eyeliner in a red-purple tone so it doesn’t look too black or gothic, but gives the eyes a little intensity,” says Baron, makeup artist for Chanel. To nail a fierce pink pout, you need to layer up the colour. “If you want it to be really poppy, apply the first layer, give it maybe 30 seconds to dry and then do another coat,” she suggests. “If you want to, you can add another coat and keep layering it up.”

Do this: add a matching blush. “I used a hint of pink- cream blush on the cheeks to stick with the pink theme while still keeping the lip as the focus,” explains Baron.

Modern red

To modernise a red lip, use a matt formulation and keep the rest of the face pared back. “I prepped the skin so it looked dewy and fresh,” says Baron, who enlisted a combination of lightweight lotions and mists to create the effect. Baron also skipped a lip pencil, instead using the tip of the lip applicator. “I used the tip for the shape, then filled the inside,” she explains. “I let it dry and applied another coat. You can keep layering it to make the colour bolder and brighter.”

Do this: skip the mascara. “No mascara makes this look feel fresher and less corporate,” says Baron. “It also gives a bit more power to the lip.”

Nude neutrals

The nude lip is your ultimate no-make-up make-up pick. “This look is about playing with textures, using different tones and keeping it all very neutral,” says Baron, who says that a matt nude lipstick gives the illusion of making lips look bigger and fuller. To find your perfect neutral tone, it pays to try different shades. “We actually used the same lip colour on both girls (right), and you can see how it translates on different skin tones,” explains Baron. “That’s why it’s a great idea to try a lip colour on and see what it looks like. A nude lip on one person might not be that same nude on another.”

Do this: try a mauvy nude. “A lot of mauvy shades are similar to the colours… [of] our lips,” says Baron. “So it’s an easy colour to wear.”
