Serum 101: What is it?
Think of a serum as your skincare investment piece (depending on the level of active ingredients, it could end up being one of the pricier items in your regimen). Made up of smaller molecules, "serums deliver potent ingredients deep into the skin for targeted benefits with quick results", explains Charlotte Turner, head of training for Clarins in Australia.
1. Cleanse and tone as usual. Be sure to use the right products for your skin type to avoid stripping it of it's natural moisture.
2. Dispense a few drops of serum between your palms, rub together to warm up the formula and then "press into the skin to maximise absorption and assimilation by the skin," explains Turner.
3. Even if your serum contains hydrating ingredients, always finish with moisturiser to create a barrier and seal in the serum's benefits.

"Apply a protective serum in the morning and a repairing serum at night to sychronise with the skin's 24-hour cycle" - Charlotte Turner, Clarins
