‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Have A Theory About The Winterfell Crypts

And it's not what we'd like to see

The second episode of Game of Thrones Season 8 made a point to let viewers know that the Winterfell crypts are a “safe” spot for the non-fighters to stay while the battle against the White army begins.

Ser Davos told the young girl that the crypts are safe. Jon told Samewell to join Gilly and little Sam in the crypts because they are the safest place. Daenerys ordered Tyrion to protect his valuable mind by staying in the crypts, where he’ll be safe. It was then that fans began to think that maybe, the crypts weren’t so safe after all.

Many believe that the Stark dead will rise from their tombs and join the army of the dead. The theory is only supported by the trailer for the next episode, which contains a moment where Daenerys tells Jon that “the dead are already here”.

The Starks have ruled Winterfell for 8000 years, which means that the castle contains thousands of corpses who could potentially rise at the command of the Night King.

Fans online also noted that there’s a scene in George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones which Jon dreams of the Stark dead emerging from their tombs: “Last night he had dreamt the Winterfell dream again. He was wandering the empty castle, searching for his father, descending into the crypts. Only this time the dream had gone further than before. In the dark, he’d heard the scrape of stone on stone. When he turned he saw that the vaults were opening, one after the other. As the dead kings came stumbling from their cold black graves, Jon had woken in pitch-dark, his heart hammering.”

So, while we don’t know anything for sure, we think something bad may be going down in the crypts.
