The 2021 Golden Globe Nominations Are A Big Win For Female Directors

Controversially, Michaela Coel's 'I May Destroy You' was noticeably missing from the nominees

Award season is no stranger to controversy, and it seems the 2021 lineup is following tradition. Overnight, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the full list of nominees for the 78th Annual Golden Globes—and while it was a historical year for female directors, many have called into question the groundbreaking performances and productions that were noticeably snubbed from its list.

This year three female directors were nominated in the Best Director category—the first time in the show’s history. Chloe Zhao for her work on Nomadland, Regina King for Night in Miami and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. Notably, Zhao became the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated in the category at the Golden Globes.

Controversially Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You was sidelined, despite the HBO series’ revolutionary confrontation of the complexities of sexual assault—which delved into Coel’s own experiences.

Meanwhile, Emily in Paris and actress Lily Collins received several nods, while Zendaya (Malcolm & Marie) and Issa Rae (Insecure) were noticeably missing.

Mank was the most nominated film overall, earning six nods, followed closely by Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, which earned five nominations. The Crown was another big hitter, with six nominations, while Schitt’s Creek earned five. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant’s The Undoing was the morning’s most-nominated limited series, with four nods.

Prior to the nominations, it was announced that activist and 15-time Golden Globe nominee, and seven-time winner, Jane Fonda will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award this year, and that the 2021 Golden Globe Ambassadors are Jackson Lee and Satchel Lee, the son and daughter of Spike and Tonya Lee.

The show is scheduled for February 28 and will be hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
