Our Predictions For The 2019 Golden Globes

And the winner is...

On Thursday, the 2019 awards season officially kicks off with the announcement of the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards nominations.

Often the Golden Globes are fairly good indicators of what performer or movie will take home the coveted Oscar, however, this year we have also seen some seriously first-class television making the opening race of award season a close one.

Here are our nominee predictions for the 2019 Golden Globes:

Television series – Drama

Nominees:

The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)

Season one of The Handmaid’s Tale absolutely cleaned up at last year’s Golden Globes, and after the major success of the second season, it should be no surprise that the TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian world will be honoured once again.

The American’s (FX)

The critically acclaimed drama series has been snubbed for most of its six-season run, but this year The American’s scored an Emmy-nod in its category, which means there’s a high probability the Golden Globe’s will follow suit.

Homecoming (Amazon)

Julia Roberts has already been tipped for Best Actress winner for her stellar performance on the small screen in this psychological drama. Homecoming was only released on Amazon last month, but many are expecting the series to be showered in accolades.

Killing Eve (BBC)

Killing Eve may have missed out on some bigger awards this Emmy season, but the groundbreaking spy thriller will undoubtedly be recognised by the Golden Globes.

Our pick for winner: The Handmaid’s Tale

Lead Actress in a TV series – Drama

Nominees:

Elisabeth Moss – The Handmaid’s Tale

Moss won last year’s Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy this year for her role as Offred in the acclaimed series. Her portrayal of the central character in the dystopian world of The Handmaid’s Tale is as stunning as it is heartbreaking.

Sandra Oh – Killing Eve

Sandra Oh shouldn’t just be nominated in this category, but the previous Golden Globe winner (for her supporting role on “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2006) should also win. Oh’s turn in the super successful spy thriller Killing Eve also got her an Emmy nod earlier this year.

Julia Roberts – Homecoming

Roberts has won the Golden Globe three times for her movie roles so there’s little doubt the HFPA will pass up the chance to reward Roberts for her turn in Homecoming, especially seeing as her performance deserves every ounce of praise it’s been receiving.

Robin Wright – House of Cards

Wright has already won a Golden Globe for her role in House of Cards, but considering her takeover of the hit show has been nothing short of great, there’s no doubt Wright will receive a Golden Globes nod.

Our pick for winner: Sandra Oh

Motion Picture – Drama

Nominees:

BlacKkKlansman
Black Panther
First Man
If Beale Street Could Talk
A Star Is Born

Surprisingly, Warner Bros. requested A Star is Born to be considered for the drama category and not a comedy/musical. Some industry people believe this may hinder the movie’s chances of nabbing an award, but it will still be nominated aplenty by the HFPA. Marvel movie Black Panther will also shake up award season with a very deserving nomination.

Our pick for winner: First Man

Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Crazy Rich Asians
The Favourite
Green Book
Mary Poppins Returns
Vice

Both Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born chose to run for best drama, which means the comedy/musical category has been left wide open. Mega-hit Crazy Rich Asians seems to be a shoo-in to take this category, but Christian Bale’s movie Vice has also been receiving some good reviews.

Our pick for winner: Crazy Rich Asians
