The Annual Golden Globes Party Has Been Cancelled

For the best reason

The Hollywood talent agency behind the likes of Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep, CAA, has taken a stand against sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood, cancelling the annual Golden Globes party and instead, using the money to set up a legal defence fund for victims of sexual harassment.

The fund, which will assist individuals both in and outside the entertainment industry, comes after the New York Times Harvey Weinstein expose, which claimed that at least eight agents within CAA were aware of allegations against the disgraced director yet, not only did they not speak out, they allegedly continued to set up private meetings between Weinstein and their female clients.

In response to the claims, CAA released a statement: “We apologise to any person the agency let down for not meeting the high expectations we place on ourselves, as individuals and as a company. We unequivocally support those who have spoken out publicly.”

Now the agency has released a further statement about the cancellation of the annual celebration: “Lasting change requires new day-to-day habits. We must act in support of our shared truth: our business and our lives will be better and stronger if we treat each other the way we wish to be treated. We all want to be treated respectfully. We all want to be included in energetic and positive opportunities, president of CAA, Richard Lovett, said.

“Everyone here is at our best – individually and collectively – when we seize the opportunity for change and make a directional commitment. This watershed moment is just such an opportunity.”
