In Need Of A Great Mane Day? Here Are The On-Trend Hair Colours For Winter 2022

It's time to update your look.

If you’re ready for a mane refresh, then perhaps you need to find the perfect colour, styles and treatment to update your look as the chilly season approaches.

For those who want a whole new hairstyle or subtle refresh, marie claire Australia beauty director, Sally Hunwick, has created the ultimate guide to find the best colours and treatments to stock up for the months to come.

Ready to give your ‘do a long overdue upgrade (and maybe build up your haircare collection)? Below, the six hair colour trends to help update your look for autumn/winter 2022.

Blended Blonde

Taking cues from Hailey Bieber’s lowlights blonde look, this is a trend lighter-toned hair types can embrace in 2022.

“What’s great about this technique is that it works on both light and dark hair, as well as all hair types,” Bright tells marie claire Australia.

DO THIS: Go subtle with face-framing highlights and piece-y threads in the rest of your hair, or “ask your colourist for balayage pieces to brighten your ends”, says Bright.

KNOW THIS: Already a pale blonde? You can still get in on the trend by creating depth with lowlights. “Ask your hairdresser to add some reversal/lowlights to give depth, and consider doing a root shadow, too.”

Very-Done Blonde

After so long locked down, ultra-fine highlights are an emerging trend. “Expensive, rich-girl hair is crème de la crème this season and my favourite type of colour,” says Bright, adding that neutral colour is the goal.

“There’s an even amount of both warm and cool tones, which cancel each other out to create almost childlike blonde.”

DO THIS: Ask your colourist if they can tailor this look to suit your hair colour and skin tone.

KNOW THIS: You’ll need regular salon visits to maintain this look, says Bright. And enlist a purple shampoo “to neutralise any yellow/orange hues that may develop and brighten up your blonde”, he says. “Use one every second or third wash.”

Warm Chocolate

If your want to update your brunette, warm tones are key this season. “Tawny, espresso, mocha and sun-kissed gold hues create soft-yet-noticeable dimension in the hair,” says Bright. “It’s super flattering on all brunettes and skin tones.”

DO THIS: “Ask your colourist to place strategic highlights in specific sections,” says Bright. “It contours the face and creates texture, shine and radiant hair colour. It’s a great alternative to balayage.”

KNOW THIS: Keep your hair colour vibrant with nourishing shampoo and conditioner.

Warm Red

SUPRIYA LELE S/S 2022
SUPRIYA LELE S/S 2022

Like Zendaya’s red look, this warm tone is a big hit for 2022. “Ronze is a mixture of copper red and bronze brown and is a major player in the red world because these shimmery hues lighten and brighten your complexion.”

If you want to stand out, Bright suggests copper. “Cuivre Red is the need-to-know shade of red for this season.”

DO THIS: Skip highlights. “Redheads will lean towards a monochromatic look,” says Bright. “No highlights, just vibrant, deep and luxurious tones.”

KNOW THIS: Be sun smart. “Reds and coppers tend to lighten up quickly when exposed to UV. So enlist a colour conditioner to maintain your colour between salon visits.”

“It’s all about the two contrasting blondes right now and I love, love, love beige and blush gold,” says Bright. If you want soft and pretty, this could be for you. “Blush gold has the perfect balance of honey, rose and creamy-blonde hues, creating a polished yet natural looking shade of blonde. It’s so radiant it lights up your whole look.”

DO THIS: Ask your colourist for a muted pure tone. “This looks even more dramatic if it closely resembles your skin tone,” says Bright.

KNOW THIS: You will need upkeep with this blonde look, so book colour appointments ahead of time.

Jet Black

ZUHAIR MURAD S/S 2022
ZUHAIR MURAD S/S 2022

There is nothing more luxe than rich, inky black hair that boasts a mirror-like shine. “When done properly, black hair is the definition of glamour,” says Bright.

DO THIS: Go dark if you have light eyes. “Black hair makes a great statement if you have light eyes – it really makes them pop,” says Bright. Take your cues from Megan Fox.

KNOW THIS: Black hair can be reversed but it may take some colourist sessions. “You’ll have to be patient for removal,” says Bright. So go dark only if you intend
to keep the look for a while.
