Hilary Duff first became a mother in 2012. For six years, her and her son Luca developed such a strong mother-son bond that the thought of bringing another baby into the equation made the Lizzie McGuire star feel guilty.

“The guilt that I felt for bringing her into the world was so big,” Hilary told PureWow. “It was just [Luca] and I for so long that he was like, ‘Why? Why, Mom? Why would you do this? I really just love the way it is.’ And it wasn’t bratty, it was just so sad.”
Luca’s reaction made Hilary doubt whether having a second child was the right decision for their family. “I was like, ‘How do I reverse this?! It’s too late now.’ It’s such big feelings. When you’re pregnant, everything just feels more magnified.”
Hilary previously told AOL that when Luca seemed hesitant to become a big brother, she tried to explain how great it was going to be. “Dude, you have no idea. This is going to be a really good thing for our family. Mom has so much room in my heart for you and a sister and you’re going to have so much fun watching her grow and teaching her things.”
As her pregnancy went on, Luca warmed up to the idea and Hilary says now he’s “100 percent obsessed with her” and she’s “grateful every day.”
“He came in after I had her. I was just holding her, and the look on his face was an absolute shock. He just said, ‘That’s my sister!’ And he had to sneeze, so he ran out of the room and was like, ‘I’ll be right back.’ He let out this huge sneeze in the hallway and said, ‘I had to sneeze and I knew I couldn’t do it in here near her.’”
Hilary says that’s when she knew “everything’s going to be OK.”
“It’s the best,” she said of the connection between Luca and his sister Banks. “It’s a chemical reaction between siblings sometimes where he knows he has to protect her. It’s really sweet the way he looks out for her. But also, sometimes I’m like, ‘Hey, I did OK with you. I promise I know what I’m doing.’”
Hilary Duff and her boyfriend at the time Matthew Koma (the pair married before Christmas last year) welcomed their daughter Banks in October 2018.
On Banks’ first birthday last year, Hilary wrote on Instagram, “Banks 🐻 what a year. You made mommy a mommy again, you made daddy a daddy (the absolute best) you made bruvah a brother (the absolute best) you are spirited and funny and brave and edible and we are so lucky that on this day one year ago you made your arrival and made our family the four pack that we are!”
