After announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s style evolved almost overnight. The former actress went from wearing ripped jeans to an event to dressing in chic coats and Manolo Blahnik heels.
And since the royal wedding, the Duchess of Sussex’s wardrobe has changed even more. Ditching the messy buns in favour of nude stockings and pale pink suits, Meghan is taking her new role seriously.
But how much is her fashion evolution costing the royal family?
Last year, Prince Charles spent £4.96 million (about $8.8 million AUD) on William, Harry, and Kate’s outfits, compared to £3.52 million ($6.2 million AUD) the year before, according to The Telegraph.
That’s an increase of £1.43 million ($2.5 million AUD) since Meghan Markle came on the scene.
The increase, however, isn’t really to do with Meghan. The royal family famously didn’t start forking out for her outfits until after the royal wedding – and Meghan, unable to accept free clothes due to royal protocol, reportedly spent $30,000 of her own money on her designer digs.
The extra money is more likely due to the fact that the Queen’s grandchildren and their wives are picking up more of her duties – and attending more engagements – as she and Prince Philip step back.
