I Tried The 4-in-1 Mascara Billed As A ‘Little Black Dress’ For Your Lashes

You’ve never seen a mascara wand quite like this before

Mascaras, I’ve tried them all: from Too Faced’s famous Better Than Sex (spoiler alert: it isn’t, but it’s pretty damn good anyway) to Maybelline’s iconic pink-and-green-packaged tube.

And while we’re used to mascara adverts making some pretty big claims – stronger! Thicker! Longer! Luscious! – when Guerlain’s new La Petite Robe Noire Black Lashdress Mascara With 4-In-1 Brush landed on my desk, it caught my eye.

A 4-in-1 mascara brush? That I had to try.

As any good lash-loving woman knows, the right brush is as crucial as the mascara formula itself: generally, the bigger the brush, the more product coats your eyelashes.

But this brush is unlike any I’ve seen before: it has a triangular body, with a round sphere on top. The idea is you use the body of the brush horizontally, like you would any old mascara wand, then point the brush vertically, using the round head to coat hard-to-reach hairs and intensify the overall result.

The 4-in-1? That’s volume, curl, length and definition. And yep, it does the lot.

I’m most impressed with the lash separation – it’s hard to imagine this mascara ever clumping and it lengthens each individual lash. It isn’t as thickening or volumising as other mascaras I’ve tried, instead offering a slightly more subtle, natural look.

At $50 a pop, it doesn’t come cheap, but the packaging kind of makes it worth it: a glossy black tube with a cute crystal-look heart on top.

Find it at Myer, David Jones and Sephora.
