‘I’m Thinking Of Ending Things’ Offers A Delightfully Unsettling Look Into A Far-From-Perfect Relationship

The film includes a star-studded line up, including Australia's own Toni Collette

Despite 2020 proving to be one of the least impressive years to date, its line up of fantastic films and television shows to binge-watch continues to serve us well.

And with October’s spooky season on its way, what better to curl up on the couch with, than Netflix’s latest thriller set to give us the chills: I’m Thinking Of Ending Things.

With a fairly innocent sounding title, the film is far from it. Made from the creator of time-erasing romantic comedy Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, the film has garnered comparisons to 2017’s Get Out for its eerie take on the ‘meet the parents’ trope. And thanks to its trailer, it’s already made its way onto our must-watch list.

Interested? Keep reading for everything we know about the film, from the plot to the cast and when you can watch it in Australia.

What Is the Plot of I’m Thinking Of Ending Things?

Netflix’s I’m Thinking Of Ending Things is created by filmmaker Charlie Kaufman, who is the brains behind mind-bending classics like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich. Adapted from Iain Reid’s novel of the same name, the film follows a somewhat traditional ‘meet the parents’ trope, but with a Kaufman-like twist.

The film follows Cindy who isn’t so sure about her boyfriend, Jake. Their “rare and intense attachment” is far from perfect, and making her question ending their relationship. Somehow, Jake seems to know what she’s thinking before she verbalises it—almost as if he senses it.

Despite that, Cindy agrees to meet his parents one weekend, where she is introduced to the profoundly odd Suzie and Dean, whose initially charming wackiness soon turns into something less than innocent. And while Cindy’s still thinking of ending things, she’s no longer sure if she should be ending her relationship, her experience with reality or even time itself.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Kaufman spoke of his somewhat confusing filmmaking approach, saying: “I don’t set out to do a mindf**k. I’m not setting out to do something that ‘tops’ some sort of brainteaser I might have done before. But there’s no question that I’m trying to build on the stuff that I’ve already done.”
