Filters like ‘Plastica’ and ‘Fix Me’ are designed to give users’ faces a plastic surgery-altered effect when snapping a selfie. Many have been quick to point out that filters like these can be detrimental to the self-image of users of the platform.
A recent study drew a direct link between participants’ desire to undergo cosmetic treatments, and their social media usage.
Amidst these growing concerns about the negative impact these filters can have on the self-image of users, Instagram will be removing all filters that mimic the effects of plastic surgery.
“We want Spark AR effects to be a positive experience and are re-evaluating our existing policies as they relate to well-being,” said Spark AR, the company responsible for creating Instagram’s filters in a Facebook post.
According to Spark AR, the changes will include the removal of “all effects associated with plastic surgery from the Instagram Effect Gallery”.
But that’s not all. Following new rules announced in September, Instagram also plans to crack down on the promotion of weight-loss products.
This will include restrictions on any posts promoting products for weight-loss or cosmetic procedures that include an incentive to buy (or have a price included), and the removal of any content that contains a “miraculous claim about certain diet or weight loss products” that appear with a commercial offer such as a discount code, reported Business Insider.
