Reasons I wanted to try out a Tesla:
- It runs on batteries, not petrol.
- It’s seriously fast (one of the fastest cars on the planet).
- Elon Musk, natch, who everyone is curious about.
I’d always pictured the sleek sports cars only. But the Tesla Model X 100D I drove for one glorious, glorious week was a seven seater (you can get it in a five or six seater if you prefer). Is it possible there is a superfast car that also actually works for families, so you don’t feel like you’re in a ‘mum’ car?
Yes. This is it.
Quite honestly, it feels like you’re in some kind of spaceship, with luxurious, buttery leather seats, a giant multimedia touchscreen that controls every feature on the car, automatically opening doors and updates to the car that automatically download to the system, as though it’s a mobile phone. It’s seriously clever and really what we should all be driving in 2018.
The charger is easy to use and if you own one, they’ll install a charger in your garage so you can just plug in every night. You can even drive from Melbourne to Brisbane (if you really, really want to), because they’ve built Tesla Supercharging stations at key points along the way.
The whole experience was futuristic and extremely luxurious – the automatically opening “falcon” doors are a novelty touch and the Tesla “eggs” – entertaining features on the multimedia screen that made the car dance to a Christmas tune (among other things) are a fun addition. Welcome to the car of the future.
