While many continue to demand justice for Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Elijah McClain and countless other Black lives that were taken at the hands of police, another series of events all too familiar has happened once again in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Jacob Blake, a Black man, was shot in the back seven times as he got into his car this week. Three of his children watched on.
Video footage released from the incident, which happened in broad daylight on Sunday afternoon in Kenosha, Wisconsin, shows police officers pulling up to a residential street to address a domestic incident. It was here that video shows officers firing seven shots at the back of Blake as he attempted to get into his car.
Per The Washington Post, Blake was there to break up a dispute between two women, and he is now fighting for his life. "Jacob is out of surgery and in ICU," wrote Blake's cousin on Twitter. "We will continue to pray as he fights. We will not excuse the actions of the Kenosha Police department, but his mother asks everyone to please remain peaceful."
The police officers involved have been placed on leave, and the city of Kenosha declared an emergency curfew after late-night protests continued into the early morning.
