Jane Fonda Resurrects Iconic Home Workouts To Fight Climate Change

Fire Drill Fridays go virtual

If you’re still yet to get on the TikTok bandwagon, this may just change your mind. Jane Fonda made her debut on the video app, appearing to bring back her eponymous abdominal workout, which changed the game for at-home videos and exercise in the 1980s.

But, she quickly revealed that her first foray into TikTok was actually to call to action for Fire Drill Fridays, the activist’s weekly rally to pressure politicians to pass a Green New Deal and save the planet from the current climate crisis. This time, though, due to the coronavirus, Fire Drill Friday will be virtual.

Instead of rallying on the steps of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. as she has previously done, Fonda is calling upon her followers to join her for a rally on her Instagram Live or TikTok page to tackle the climate crisis while staying at home in accordance with suggested social distancing rules.

In the clip, a flash of retro footage of Fonda doing her famed “chicken arms” move plays before the 82-year-old launches into a strengthening leg lift sequence wearing a red leotard and flared pants.

“You know what? There are too many workouts happening right now on television and on computers,” she says, sporting her red protest coat (the last piece of clothing she swears she will ever buy). “What I would really like you to do is work out with me for the planet. There’s a climate crisis that’s a real emergency, and so whether you’re on your couch or your yoga mat, will you join me for the virtual Fire Drill Fridays? The future needs you. I need you.”

You can join Fonda for virtual Fire Drill Fridays “whether you’re on your couch or your yoga mat” as part of her efforts “to keep the pressure on politicians to adopt a #GreenNewDeal, end new fossil fuels, and enact a just transition to a renewable economy that protects workers and communities.”
