She didn’t hold back

We are in awe of all Jennifer Lopez does. The girl’s talent knows no bounds and let’s be honest, she hasn’t aged a day in the last 20 years; a fact that was proven when she closed out Versace’s Spring 2020 Paris Fashion Week show last week, wearing an updated version of her iconic revealing jungle dress that she famously wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards and looked just as good, if not better, 19 years later.

But no one is without their flaws, and in a 1998 interview with Movieline, JLo ripped into her fellow Hollywood leading ladies and it wasn’t pretty.

The interview recently resurfaced, and grab your popcorn because she got real honest about her opinions of Cameron Diaz, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and a handful of other female A-listers.

At the time, JLo was 29-years-old and edging her way up from what she called “the bottom of the A-list of actresses”.

When asked about another A-lister, Salma Hayek, Jennifer said, “We’re in two different realms. She’s a sexy bombshell and those are the kinds of roles she does. I do all kinds of different things. It makes me laugh when she says she got offered Selena, which was an outright lie. If that’s what she does to get herself publicity, then that’s her thing. Columbia offered me the choice of Fools Rush In or Anaconda, but I chose the fun B-movie because the Fools script wasn’t strong enough.”

Next, she unleashed on Cameron Diaz. “A lucky model who’s been given a lot of opportunities I just wish she would have done more with. She’s beautiful and has a great presence, though, and in My Best Friend’s Wedding, I thought, ‘When directed, she can be good.'”

The next casualty was Gwyneth Paltrow, and JLo really let loose. “Tell me what she’s been in? I swear to God, I don’t remember anything she was in. Some people get hot by association. I heard more about her and Brad Pitt than I ever heard about her work.”

Ouch!

So what did she think of Madonna? “Do I think she’s a great performer? Yeah. Do I think she’s a great actress? No. Acting is what I do, so I’m harder on people when they say, ‘Oh, I can do that–I can act.’ I’m like, ‘Hey, don’t spit on my craft.'”

Thankfully, Jennifer’s grown up a lot since then and instead of criticising her fellow actresses, she’s super supportive.

“There are so many smart, talented women out there, in front of and behind the camera, and I think we’re at a point where our voices are not stifled as much,” she told Variety. “Because of the #MeToo movement, it’s ‘We are equal, and we want to be treated that way’. We’ve been making our own opportunities, and as you prove your worth and value to people, they can’t put you in a box. You hustle it into happening, right?”
