Both the men and women wore sombre attire as a mark of respect, however they added certain details to their outfits as a tribute to the fallen.

For example, the Queen wore five poppies, apparently to represent each service in the World Wars – the Army, the Navy, the RAF, the Civil Defence and women.

Kate Middleton also wore a poppy, but one with a special significance to her. The single red flower, which is inscribed with ‘lest we forget’ on the back, was released to honour the 13,000 men and women on the Bletchley Park roll of honour.

The workers at Bletchley Park worked tirelessly during the war to crack German codes and help the allied troops win the war. One such worked was Catherine’s own grandmother Valerie Glassborow, so she honoured her by wearing that poppy.

On her balcony, Meghan wore a black coat and hat and no jewellery at all, just a single paper poppy as a sign of respect.

The pair looked on as their husbands, Prince Harry and Prince William, laid poppy wreaths.
