An inventory of glimmering dresses, tailored trousers and perfect coats is effectively Kate Middleton’s personal brand—so you’ll have to forgive us for sitting up with keen interest when the Duchess of Cambridge went off-piste this weekend by wearing a pair of shorts.
Indeed, on Sunday, the 40-year-old stepped out in Plymouth, UK for the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix wearing an ensemble as on-theme as ever—a nautical navy and white striped jumper and a pair of crisp white shorts.
The summery shorts in question were designed by Holland Cooper. Costing AUD $347, they featured a tapered waist with gold buttons.
The Duchess also opted for a pair of Superga sneakers—a go-to brand of Kate’s—to finish the nautical look.
The Great Britain sailing team is going head to head with New Zealand in the Commonwealth Race, adjacent to the Commonwealth Games currently underway in Birmingham. A long time sailing fan, Kate hopped aboard with British Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie, a long time acquaintance whom she first met at the London 2012 Olympics.
And for the water element of the days events, the Duchess changed into a full wetsuit and tied her hair into a ponytail with a baseball cap.

Kate’s sailing event came alongside a rare appearance from her husband Prince William and their six-year-old daughter Princess Charlotte, who filmed a video together wishing all the best to Britain’s women’s soccer team, the Lionesses, who competed in the Euro 2022 final.
“Good luck, I hope you win. Bye!” Charlotte added after Wills’ message of support.
The pair (and the rest of the Cambridge family) were no doubt thrilled with the result—the Lionesses beat Germany 2-1.
It’s expected we’ll see plenty more of the royals in the coming days as the Commonwealth Games continue in the UK.
