When it comes to film and television adaptations of Princess Diana, Twilight’s Kristen Stewart is arguably not the first person you’re going to think of—partly because, she’s not British. But, the actress has been cast as the late royal for an upcoming biopic.
According to Deadline, Stewart will depict the People’s Princess in the new Pablo Larraín–directed drama, Spencer. Larraín is well-known for his work on Jackie, the Jackie Kennedy biopic starring Natalie Portman.
The film “covers a critical weekend in the early ’90s, when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working, and that she needed to veer from a path that put her in line to one day be queen,” the publication explained. “The drama takes place over three days, in one of her final Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor in their Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England.”
In the latest photo to emerge of Stewart in the iconic role, fans are doing a double take at how similar she looks to the Princess Of Wales. The image, shared by production company Neon, shows the actress sporting a green-and-red tartan coat over a cream knit turtleneck, paired with a feathery blonde wig.
Resting her head on her left hand, she also shows off a replica of the late princess’s engagement ring, which was originally a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire surrounded by solitaire diamonds.
At the beginning of March, Stewart made her first appearance as Diana in a still released from the upcoming Larraín film, showing the actress in a veiled boater hat, pussy-bow blouse, and red jacket—as well as Diana’s signature feathery blonde hair and piercing gaze. Her red coat is actually vintage Chanel, sourced from the fashion house’s Fall-Winter 1988/1989 collection.
The film is a “dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” the actress said in a statement. “It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
Joining Stewart in the cast are Timothy Spall (Secrets & Lies), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), and Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Prometheus). The screenplay is by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
“Kristen is one of the great actors around today,” Larraín told Deadline. “To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature.”
“I’ve seen movies from Kristen that are so diverse, it’s incredible, showing different layers and her diversity and strength as an actress,” he continued. “We’re very happy to have her, she’s very committed. As a filmmaker, when you have someone who can hold such a weight, dramatic and narrative weight, just with her eyes, then you have the strong lead who can deliver what we are looking for.”
In a recent interview with InStyle U.S., Stewart also teased how she’s preparing to transform her American accent into Princess Diana‘s British one.
“The accent is intimidating as all hell because people know that voice, and it’s so, so distinct and particular. I’m working on it now and already have my dialect coach,” Steward revealed.
“In terms of research, I’ve gotten through two and a half biographies, and I’m finishing all the material before I actually go make the movie.”
Stewart’s portrayal of Diana follows Emma Corrin’s breakout performance of the royal in The Crown’s fourth season on Netflix. Australia’s own Elizabeth Debicki will succeed her in the role in Season five, which will likely premiere in 2022.
