Three months after she disappeared, the body of Melbourne woman Sophie Dowsley has been found in a Canadian river.
Ms Dowsley, 34, set off on a day hike near Statali Falls in British Colombia with her Canadian partner, Gregory James Tiffin, 44, on July 10. Alarm bells were raised after they failed to return home, and Mr Tiffin’s body was found at a dangerous waterfall near Harrison Lake 12 days later, The ABC reports.
Ms Dowsley’s sunglasses were discovered nearby, but her body evaded Canadian search teams until September 23. The Age reports that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, together with volunteer search and rescue teams, discovered her remains thanks to low water levels in the treacherous waterfall canyons where the couple had been hiking.
The discovery of Ms Dowsley’s body was made public this week, after her identity was officially confirmed.
“Discovery of Sophie’s remains brings closure, not only for family and friends, but for the volunteers who were heavily invested in finding Sophie,” said Neil Brewer, search and rescue manager. “This was a difficult search in very technical terrain.”
