Police are searching more than 30 properties in Toronto, Canada, in fear that a landscaper who is accused of murdering five men might have killed more.
Police allege that 66-year-old Bruce McArthur, killed five men and buried their body parts in potted plants on properties where he was working as a landscaper.
McArthur was arrested on January 18 after police charged his apartment and found a man died to his bed, news.com.au reports. He has since been charged with the deaths of missing men Selim Esen, 44, Andrew Kinsman, 49, Majeed Kayhan, 58, Soroush Mahmudi, 50, and Dean Lisowick, 47.
“We do believe there are more and I have no idea how many more there are going to be,” homicide detective Sgt. Hank Idsinga told CNN.
“It’s a serial killer — alleged serial killer…The city of Toronto has never seen anything like this. The resources that are being thrown at it, everything that we have. I’d call it an unprecedented type of investigation.”
Police initially believed the alleged deaths were connected to Toronto’s Gay Village, but the victim profile has extended further beyond the area.
“The last two victims don’t quite fit the profile of the earlier victims. It encompasses more than just the gay community,” Idsinga said.
“It encompasses the city of Toronto.”
By next week, authorities plan to begin excavation on part of a lawn at an uptown Toronto home where McArthur worked.
McArthur’s lawyer Jeffery Couse declined to comment, CNN reports.
