Sydney nurse and newlywed Kelly Clarke and husband Chase jetted off to Fiji to attend a friendโs wedding and to celebrate their own honeymoon.
But the coupleโs trip ended in heartbreak when Kelly was taken to hospital after falling ill on Wednesday, with what was initially diagnosed as typhoid fever. The 24-year-oldโs family confirmed the heartbreaking news that Kelly did not survive the ordeal.
As Nine News reports, the young nurse died from severe bilateral pneumonia and died in hospital on Friday night.
Kellyโs parents have flown to Fiji to make arrangements for her body and support her devastated husband Chase.
Chase told The Daily Telegraph that he was โcompletely and utterly devastatedโ and that Kellyโs death came โas a complete shockโ.
โWhen weโre stronger we will reveal the complete causes of death but severe bilateral pneumonia is the main one,โ he said.
โKelly is a wonderful kind soul, the last thing you expect on your honeymoon is to lose your wife, she had her whole life ahead of her,โ Chase continued.
โWe just want her home, itโs a waiting game for us now, weโre just shocked and devastated and canโt explain how we feel.
โI just feel numb.โ
A spokeswoman for The Childrenโs Hospital at Westmead said Kellyโwho worked as a post-operative nurseโwould be sorely missed.
โKelly was a dedicated nurse who loved working with children and will be greatly missed by her colleagues and patients,โ the spokeswoman said.
