Why Is Julianne Moore So Damn Cool?

We meet Hollywood’s most personable redhead in Venice

It’s just after 11am in Venice and Julianne Moore is dressed for cocktail hour in a sleeveless black Prada dress with feather trim. Her dress is a bit less showy than the feathery pink, red and yellow Calvin Klein one she wore to the Met Gala this year, but she carries it off with the sort of casual elegance you might expect from an actress who has been walking red carpets for the past 20-odd years.

While in Italy, Moore walked the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival where her new movie, the George Clooney-directed black comedy Suburbicon, was unveiled to considerable acclaim.

Having just played the villainess in Kingsman: The Golden Circle and starring in the upcoming Todd Haynes film Wonderstruck later this year, it’s been an especially rewarding period for Moore.

“What was nice about this year for me was the flexibility of my roles,” she says. “That feels good. It feels good for anybody; it feels good for women … men, for actors. We’re looking for opportunities to play a part. I don’t think you ever want to play an archetype … [or] yourself.”

Still, we’d buy tickets to see Julianne Moore playing Julianne Moore…
