Leaving Neverland is the divisive HBO documentary chronicling the alleged sexual abuse perpetrated by Michael Jackson as told by his victims Wade Robson and James Safechuck. The harrowing retelling, directed by Dan Reed, marks a significant moment in our collective psyche effectively shattering the hero worship of the late King Of Pop.
Leaving Neverland also evokes one very important question: what happens next? During a recent interview with The Film Stage, Reed hinted that a follow-up Michael Jackson expose could be in the works. Reed said that he is interested in exploring the details of the 2004-05 jury trial, in which Jackson was found not guilty on all charges associated after being accused of molesting a then-13-year-old boy named Gavin Arvizo. However, the Neverland director acknowledges that one major factor in the potential documentary is that Reed and his family would need to agree for the story to be complete.
“The film I would really like to make following this one is the trial of Michael Jackson. I could only do that if the victim and his family participate,” Reed admits. Adding, “If Gavin Arvizo and his family would agree to participate, I would very much like to tell the story of that trial. I think it’s fascinating and astonishing that Michael was acquitted.”
Arvizo’s reluctance to undergo the public’s scrutiny, that unavoidably comes with speaking out against Jackosn, is clear by his flat-out refusal to comment on the two-part documentary. A long-time friend of Arvizo’s told The Wrap in March, “He doesn’t really want to talk about it right now. He just wants to become a man and have a family and a career and not have this be the standout portion of who he is.”
