Deadline reports that multiple sources have confirmed the production of the third film saying that MGM Studios is near a deal with original film's creative team.
As well as practising law on screen, Witherspoon will also produce the film through her company, Hello Sunshine. Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, who co-wrote the first film adapted from the original Legally Blonde novel by Amanda Brown, are in final talks to write the new movie's script, and original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are also returning.
As of now, specifics of the new film's plot remain under wraps, but Deadline reports "it will be much in the spirit of the first film."
Witherspoon revealed she was open to the idea of a third movie in 2016, telling E! News, "We've thought about it. I need somebody really clever to come up with a great idea and we'll do it. I do think it's a good time to do it - I think women need that kind of positivity right now."
Though she hasn't officially commented on the new role, Witherspoon is liking Instagram posts about it and adding pink love hearts to some - that's about as close as an Elle Woods confirmation as they come.
