Kaling and Goor's script is said to be "an entirely new fresh spin" from a previous version of the screenplay, per Deadline. According to Deadline, Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, the screenwriters responsible for bringing Amanda Brown's book to the big screen back in 2001, were first tasked with writing the script.
While no other cast members have been confirmed, some have revealed they'd love to be involved.
Jennifer Coolidge, who played Elle's manicurist BFF in the original two films, says she'd return if asked. "I know that there's a script that's in the works, I'm told," Coolidge told ET. "And I keep seeing all this press about it. I hear that it is going, but I just don't know what the timeline is," she continued. "But you know, if I'm asked to do it I'll definitely be in there."
She added, "I would love to play Paulette again."
As for Elle's husband Emmett, the pair would no doubt be married by now. Luke Wilson, who played Elle's lawyer husband, recently told Entertainment Tonight that he's down to return to the role.
"I have not talked to Reese about it, but yeah I always kind of hear rumors here and there," he told the outlet. "Never anything official about them doing another Legally Blonde, but I'd love to do another one. I mean, just that character Reese played was so funny at the time and that has kind of become this iconic character now."
"I would say they definitely have a few children and I just think that it'd be really funny if Reese had a little mini-me, a version of herself," he told ET. "I would definitely think that they'd have a couple of children."
Witherspoon has also previously stated the new film will be full of "feminist" ideas.
During an interview for The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon was asked to fill in the blank: "Legally Blonde 3 will be..." She said the new movie will be, "So much fun. So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals. It will have returning cast members. We just need to film it first. But that’s my hope and dream for Legally Blonde 3."
