We Unpack Sarah J. Maas’ Cryptic ACOTAR 6 Announcement

Is it an 8 or an arrow?
ACOTAR

The frenzy surrounding the sixth book from the series, A Court Of Thorns And Roses or ACOTAR, is reaching fever pitch online and understandably so. Fans of Sarah J. Maas’ best-selling “romantasy” novels have been patiently waiting for an announcement of book six since its predecessor, A Court of Silver Flames, was released in 2021.

After four long years, that patience has worn noticeably thin. The ACOTAR fan base has been in a frenzy of theories, clues and all round anticipation since it was announced a sixth installment is on its way. Following a painfully extended silence, on July 11, Maas finally gave fans what they’d been waiting for: confirmation book 6 is complete.

Taking to Instagram, the author shared a video dramatically shutting a notebook with ‘ACOTAR 6’ and a symbol fans can’t seem to agree over, penned on the front. She’s then seen shutting her laptop and popping a bottle of champagne in celebration.

“First drafts DONE.” Maas captioned the video, confirming what fans immediately suspected.

Naturally, the announcement has sent the Maas-dom into overdrive, so, let’s unpack fact, fiction and theories about ACOTAR 6.

Sarah J Maas’ ACOTAR 6 Announcement

One tiny (in size not in importance) detail in Maas’ announcement has sent fans into a speculative spiral: is it an arrow or the number 8 scrawled on her notebook?

Some are arguing that Maas just revealed we’re in for three more books, and that the annotation on the notebook reads, “ACOTAR 6 – 8”.

Would we really get such major news in such a casual reveal? Possibly. Maas’ only complete series, Throne Of Glass is a set of eight books. Perhaps, the author is following a pattern?

Fans also pointed out that Maas’ – an author who would arguably have impeccable grammar skills – wrote ‘drafts’ as a plural rather than the singular form: “first draft is done” or “first draft done”.

The other camp believes it’s simply an arrow or a dash followed by the letter D. While the capital letter would be easily chalked up to an abbreviation for ‘drafts’, the arrow holds little to no symbolism.

So which is it? Only Maas knows.

What Will ACOTAR Book 6 Be About?

There’s no confirmation from author Sarah J. Maas on the plot of book six, but you can bet there are some compelling theories and clues.

Given the previous book, A Court Of Silver Flame which centred on Nesta, came to a relatively neat conclusion many believe the sixth installment will now focus on the third sister, Elaine.

When it comes to the garden-loving sister, there are many questions still answered particularly about the depth of her cauldron-blessed powers and her love-life – will it be a forbidden romance with Azriel? Will she come around to her mate, Lucien? Or as some fans have theorised given Elaine’s love of flora, perhaps she’ll find another partner in Spring Court lord, Tamlin (ugh).

Following on from Maas’ announcement, which may or may not hint at three more books, some believe we’re in for another trilogy, similar to the first three books in the series which centred on Feyre.

When Will ACOTAR 6 Be Released?

There’s no date announcement for the release of the next book… yet.

Some fans have theorised we may get a Winter Solstice release date, given the gravitas the date holds in the ACOTAR universe, which would mean December 22, 2025 (and hopefully not 2026).

Stay tuned for more info.
