Netflix’s ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Is A Tear-Jerking Love Letter To The ‘Mother Of The Blues’

The film also marks Chadwick Boseman's final performance

Given the state of 2020, there’s no wonder why period dramas are so high on our must-watch list.

From the element of escapism to the jaw-dropping costumes, there is a new flick that has garnered the attention of many—for more reasons than one.

Enter: Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Based on the true story of Ma Rainey, one of the original African-American Blues singers on the scene, the film follows her impressive jazz career, but more importantly, the trials and tribulations of the music industry and the racism they were forced to endure.

And while only a few singers in the world made it big in the blues, Netflix’s highly anticipated film is on its way to share the inspiring story of the “Mother of the Blues” herself.

What Is The Plot Of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom?

Set in Chicago in 1924, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom follows the “Mother of the Blues” through her career as one of the first Afrian-American professional blues singers.

The story is told from the perspective of a single, high-tension recording session with Rainey and her backing band, including ambitious jazz horn player Levee. The story follows the band as they struggle to record their songs while fighting against a white recording studio’s attempts to control the music they make.

Based on a true story, and a play by August Wilson, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is also the late Chadwick Boseman’s last film, which he completed shortly before his tragic death earlier in the year.
