With less than a month before season three of The Crown is released, we’ve finally been blessed with the first full trailer giving us a hint at the drama that will unfold and our first proper look at Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.

The trailer opens on Jubilee Day, the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the queen’s ascension to the throne. But the celebation is overshadowed with her doubt and the country’s turmoil. “On days like today, ask yourself, in the time I’ve been on the throne, what have I actually achieved?” Colman says.

“The country is bankrupt, our national security is in tatters,” a voice says, before Prince Philip (Tobias Menzies) tells the queen, “If that man wins, they’ll want us out”, speaking about former Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Another voice notes, “This is no longer peacetime” as clips of people protesting in the city are shown.

A key storyline in the new season looks to be Prince Charles’ struggle with his royal duty, showing his now-wife Camilla Parker-Bowles (Emerald Fennell) in the bath, before an unidentified voice says: “Never turn your back on true love” and “watch out for your family.”

When Charles (Josh O’Connor) responds with, “They mean well,” the person responds, “No they don’t.”

There also seems to be a power struggle between the queen and Princess Margaret still, continuing on from seasons one and two. In a voiceover, she says “Frustrations and resentments can build up from a life as a support act,” before someone says, “elder sister, younger sister, number one and number two” to which Margaret replies, “who’s number one?” and the man says, “You. She knows it too.”

Though fans are eagerly anticipating Princess Diana’s role in the series, apparently she’s not a central storyline until season four. We will, however, see Charles meeting Diana, then known as Lady Spencer, this coming season. Producers confirmed that a young Princess Diana will appear by the final episodes of season three, before becoming the show’s star in seasons four and five.

The Crown Season 3 premieres Sunday, November 17 on Netflix.
