Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson Reveals She Attempted Suicide After Ongoing Cyberbullying

The singer is opening up about her struggles with mental health

Little Mix might be one of the UK’s most popular bands of the decade, but with their success comes the immense pressures of fame, something that singer Jesy Nelson has revealed impacted her so negatively that at one point she attempted to end her life.

In her upcoming BBC Three documentary Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, the 28-year-old said that cyberbullying affected her self-esteem, body image and eventually led to depression.

After Little Mix returned to X-Factor as guests in 2013, Jesy says that negativity on social media led her to attempt suicide. “I was sat in bed crying,” she told BBC Three, “thinking, ‘this is never going to go, I’m going to feel sad for the rest of my life, so what is the point in being here?’”

“The only way I can describe the pain is like constantly being heartbroken,” she continued. “I remember going to the kitchen and I just took as many tablets as I could. Then my ex, who was with me at the time, he woke up and was like, ‘why are you crying?’ I kept saying, ‘I just want to die’.”

Jesy was taken to hospital and afterwards made a huge effort to prioritise her mental health with therapy and by distancing herself from the online world. “It was a long, hard process, because I didn’t want to help myself,” she told the Guardian. “But it wasn’t until I deleted Twitter that everything changed for me and I slowly started to feel normal again.”

Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out is released on 12 September, which is  R U OK? Day, on BBC Three.
