6 Trends To Come Out Of London Fashion Week

6 Trends To Come Out Of London Fashion Week

We’ve already broken down the street style trends — where beige and boots ruled — from London fashion week, so it only makes sense that we’d come for the runway next. And boy, was it a season.

While London might not have the heavyweights that Milan and Paris boast, it does have heritage, innovation and plenty of cool kids doing very cool things. Hit makers like Burberry, J.W. Anderson and Christopher Kane bought serious punch, while femininity was brought to life via Victoria Beckham and Molly Goddard — colour included. It was a season of contrasts, of throwbacks (hello, diamond argyle prints) and of bright, showstopping hues, with Londoners welcoming block colours and monochromatic dressing. Below, we round up six of our favourite trends to come out of the week.

Argyle sweaters

Argyle sweaters

A blast from your grandfather’s past, argyle sweaters are back with a vengeance. Seen at Preen, Molly Goddard and Victoria Beckham, checked-up diamonds made golf day seem inherently chic. The best way to wear it? Deconstructed with a hint of metal — glamorous!

Snakeskin

Alexa Chung, Rejina Pyo

Shades of snakeskin

Not a new one, but we’re loving that snakeskin isn’t going anywhere. Seen on bags and shoes throughout the week, designers are sneaking in this slithering print with just the right amount of sartorial punch. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, snakeskin is 2019’s new neutral.

Pink

Roksanda, Christopher Kane, J.W. Anderson

Fuschia’s moment

Millennial pink has been a buzzword ever since Pantone announced it as the Colour of the Year in 2016. Now, designers are playing beyond the pastel and taking fuchsia for a good, hard spin. Call it the Valentino effect, but the shockingly bright pink doesn’t seem to be going away — if London Fashion Week has anything to do about it.

Rainbow dresses

Mary Katrantzou, Molly Goddard, Roksanda

Triple rainbows

Londoners might be known for grey and dreary weather, but the clothes being put out on the runways were inherently bright. Rainbow shades in kaleidoscopic colours were paraded down the runway in all forms. Dresses took the form of artist palettes, with all shades of pinks, blues, yellows and greens making their way onto tulle, knits and cottons.

Suiting

Chalayan, Victoria Beckham, Peter Pilotto

Fluid suiting — with a twist

It just isn’t going away! Call it the decade of the oversized power suit, but this once-80s trend has transformed into a whole new genre: relaxed, languid clothing that makes the wearer feel as comfortable as they do executive. In London, it was all about pairing a jacket with a skirt. A little sexier, a little bit more feminine, the suiting trend has now gone full circle, with designers confident enough to play around with proportions and structure with ease.

Candy coloured stockings

Burberry, Vivienne Westwood, Peter Pilotto

Candy coloured stockings

Stockings were everywhere on the street this season, so it only makes sense that the runways weren’t far behind. Autumn shades of burgundy, green and navy were abundant, with designers taking on the task of keeping our pins warm very seriously. We’re on board.
