What is the true story behind Love Fraud?
Love Fraud follows the search for one man, Richard Scott Smith, who for more than 20 years used the internet to prey upon unsuspecting women looking for love.
There are at least 10 women across the United States’ Midwest who’ve been conned by him, each with a similar story of financial fraud, personal deceit and, in at least one case, bigamy. And in another, it was a case of a vicious physical assault.
Putting on different personas to seduce them, he frequently fabricated his entire identity. He then played the perfect partner these women, most of whom were in their 40s or 50s, sometimes marrying them, before taking off — with their life savings and dignity.
“He tells great stories,” Jean Hansen, one of Smith’s many former wives, told The Kansas City Star in 2017.
“It’s part of his charm.”
