The Lunar New Year Is Here & So Is An Excuse To Wear Red

Gong xi fa cai!

For many of us living in Australia, this marks the second Lunar New Year that hasn’t been celebrated with a trip back to see family overseas. While ringing in the Year of the Ox won’t quite be the same when not surrounded by aunties, there are personal traditions that we’ll be observing regardless.

Many traditions around celebrating the Lunar New Year are based on calling in good fortune, luck and prosperity for one’s family and oneself. There are actions like cleaning the outside of your house before the new year—definitely not after, that could wash away the good luck. It wouldn’t be the Lunary New Year without the giving and receiving of red packets, hongbao in Mandarin and lai see in Cantonese, these little monetary gifts always go down well.

One of the traditions that many of the more materially-minded also love to embrace? Many people still observe the practice of heading into the new year in new clothes, all the better if they’re red too. A more minimal approach to this is at least making sure you’re wearing new underwear, but, if you’re looking to splash a little red packet cash, we’ve rounded up some of our festive favourites below.

(Yes, there are eight picks, for extra luck!)
