Chinese New Year is almost here for 2020, officially kicking off from January 25th. A major tradition that has sparked from Chinese New Year is to buy new clothing that symbolises “a new start and fresh hopes for the New Year”. The collections usually come in red and gold, which are considered to be lucky and bring prosperity into the home. With that, many luxury fashion brands use the time of year to drop exclusive capsule collections in keeping with the new zodiac symbol.

This year, Gucci has shifted away from rats and opted for a collaboration with Disney on a Mickey Mouse collection. Longchamp has teamed up with some of Asia’s most popular influencers for a capsule collection, and luxury labels like Kate Space and Versace have designed collections in lucky red. The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals and represents the beginning of a new day. In Chinese culture, rats are seen as a sign of wealth and surplus and, due to their reproduction rate, married couples are encouraged to pray to them for children.

Gucci

Splashing Mickey Mouse on their iconic dad trainers, monogrammed patterns and even their furry horse-bit loafers, the fashion house has also created colourful illustrations printed onto their white quilted double G bags. Key to the collection is a new material: the Mini GG Supreme canvas with Mickey Mouse print, a beige and ebony fabric that features a vintage Mini GG print with Mickey Mouse playfully applied to it in varying scale. The Lunar New Year collection also has its own dedicated packaging, which comprises red tissue paper, red fabric pouches with drawstring closures and Mickey Mouse emblazoned on them, and green shopping bags and boxes featuring a miniature repeat print of Mickey Mouse.

Roger Vivier

For the Year of the Rat, Roger Vivier has presented a special edition of the Viv’ Run strass buckle sneakers to celebrate. Creative Director Gherardo Felloni presented the Rose Button collection as a homage to Monsieur Vivier’s love for flowers. This season, he gets inspiration from Asian flora, such as cherry and plum tree blossoms, that bloom in Spring. The print resembles a hand-painted, watercolour design placed on the outward-facing side, on the sole and the upper part of the shoes. The special Chinese New Year edition will come in two colours: red flowers on a pink base and pink flowers on a white base.
