Everything You Need To Know About Netflix’s Madeleine McCann Documentary

Twelve years on from Maddie's disappearance

The Madeleine McCann case is one of the world’s most well-known missing person cases. In May 2007, the then 3-year-old British toddler went missing on a trip to Portugal with her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann. Her whereabouts remain unknown.

The series is set to be released on Netflix on May 3 in Australia and will chronicle the case through interviews with those closest to the McCanns. Gerry and Kate McCann have reportedly refused to take part, and want “nothing to do with” the explosive series. A source close to the filmmakers told Daily Mail: “Everyone everywhere is fascinated by the Maddie story. We would have welcomed the opportunity of working with the McCanns directly but they informed us they couldn’t and wouldn’t consider taking part while a police investigation into their daughter’s abduction is ongoing.”

The filmmakers added, “We have interesting new interviews with people close to the inquiry and we believe we can give justice to this unbelievably tragic story.”

Sharing a synopsis of the doc, per Refinery29, a spokesperson for Netflix, shared: “”By blending new interviews with more than 40 contributors, 120 hours of interviews, archival news footage and reenactments, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann goes beyond the headlines and takes a unique look at the facts of the case as well as its impact on media standards around the world.”

Even 12 years since Madeleine’s disappearance, the 12-year cold case remains one of the most infamous in history. McCann disappeared from a hotel room in the resort town of Praia da Luz, in Southern Portugal, while her parents were at dinner at a restaurant near the hotel room. McCann’s twin siblings, Sean and Amelie, remained asleep, and to this day, nobody really knows what happened to Madeleine, who would be turning 16 in May of this year.

Following Madeleine’s disappearance, Gerry and Kate McCann were hounded by the British press, with criticism aimed at their parenting for leaving their infant children unattended. Since then, Madeleine’s case has become one of the most noteworthy missing person’s cases in history.

The Netflix documentary will be released Friday, March 15.
