Still Shocked Over ‘Mare Of Easttown? HBO Bosses Just Gave An Update On A Potential Second Season

There are still more stories to tell.

Warning: Spoilers for Mare of Easttown ahead, proceed at your own risk.

Mare of Easttown left fans around the world reeling with that shock ending. You know, the one which saw innocent 12-year-old Ryan Ross revealed as Erin McMenamin’s murderer. After pointing the finger at just about everyone in this show, he was probably the last person you suspected but hey, it makes for great television.

Despite the murder finally being solved, we can’t help but feel these characters have more stories to tell. Will Mare and Lori’s friendship recover from her betrayal? How will Ryan cope in juvenile detention? What is the fate of John Ross? How is Katie Bailey managing after returning home from capture? There are far too many questions for this to be the end of the road.

Well, you can breathe a sigh of relief, because it seems the big bosses over at HBO feel the exact same way. While the show was originally intended to be a limited series, the overwhelmingly positive response has inspired the network to give creator Brad Ingelsby a three-year exclusive overall deal. Casey Bloys, the head of HBO, has announced he is more than willing to give the show another run under the right circumstances.

“Brad just did a fantastic job on Mare,” Casey said in a new interview with Variety. “It was a great collaboration.”

Obviously, the possibility of a second season hinges on whether or not there’s still a story to tell.

“If Brad felt like he had a story to tell that felt like it would be at the same level, I think everybody would be open to it,” Casey said in the same interview. “Right now, he doesn’t have that story. Who knows? We’ll have to wait to see if they come up with something they’re dying to tell.”

“I don’t even have any idea that there’s going to be a timeline [for making a second season],” he continued. “Usually we take the lead from our creators. There’s been no real conversations about what a Season 2 would look like.”

And it seems it isn’t just the bosses at HBO who are keen to see a revival, either. In fact, Kate Winslet herself is already missing Mare and would be more than happy to return to the role.

“I would absolutely love to play Mare again,” she told TVLine in a post-finale interview. “I miss her. I really do. It’s the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role. There’s something very addictive about Mare, because she’s so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her.”
