After Tuesday’s firecracker of an episode, Married At First Sight fans were holding onto their seats in anticipation of Sunday’s finale. But the reunion fell flat, especially in comparison to the jaw-dropping antics of the past few weeks.

Only the stories of Steve and Mishel; Aleks and Ivan; Stacey and Michael; producers’ pet Lizzie and Seb; Hayley and David; and possibly the most boring couple of the season, Connie and Jonethen, were shown to the group.

Why wasn’t Josh and his mum’s behaviour towards Cathy shown? Why did Poppy and Luke leave so dramatically? What happened between KC and Drew? Why the hell does David insist on wearing such deplorable shirts? Why is Ivan sporting a man-bun in the year 2020? So many questions, but so much air-time dedicated instead to Michael – the season 7 “villain”.

The reunion was filmed the day after the final dinner party where Mikey publicly claimed that he had had a one night stand with Stacey after Stacey was left devastated mid-experiment when Michael party-pashed Hayley. The infamous drunken kiss, which Michael claims he still can’t remember, left Hayley’s husband David so furious he filmed himself using Hayley’s toothbrush as a toilet brush. She continued to use the toothbrush for days afterwards.

“There’s no trust, that’s that,” Stacey said about her split from Michael, even though they had been loved-up just 24 hours before.

“I can handle the truth if it is true,” Michael said. “But what I can’t handle is the lies.”

When asked by neuropsychotherapist Dr Trisha Stratford what he made about the sudden split, Mikey saw his chance to get some airtime.

“For me to sit here and be the reason for your split it makes me emotional because I did the wrong thing,” Mikey said. “Even though for me it wasn’t about cheating on Natasha because we were done, we were finished.

“I knew Michael and Stacey weren’t getting on, he had moved out, and I’m apologising to you now, whether you think it’s real, whether you think it’s not. I didn’t think you guys would end up back together.”

Michael hit back with this cracker: “Hope it was the best 10 seconds of your life.”

“We never had a one night stand, Mikey,” Stacey insisted. “We were friends. He was there for me, 100 per cent, and I told Micheal that.”

Mel Schilling asked: “Why do you think he is saying this?”

“I don’t know, I don’t get it,” Stacey said.

“I just can’t believe what you are saying,” Mikey told Stacey.

“And I can’t believe what you are saying,” she replied.

“It’s going to be her word against mine and all I can do is tell my truth,” Mikey said.

Mikey said he has texts asking Stacey to return his clothes after he left her room the next morning in his jocks.

“I’m still in love with her, but at the end of the day, there is always going to be an element of doubt,” Michael said.

“Stacey doubts me for the Hayley thing and I think if there is doubt for a minute, I don’t want to be a part of it.”

Since filming ended, Michael has entered into yet another wife swap with KC from the experiment. Will he ever learn?

In another unlikely turn of events, Hayley and David made-up and he took full responsibility for his actions.

“It was the lowest moment we have seen over the seasons in this experiment,” John Aiken said of toothbrush-gate.

Stacey also apologised to Hayley and Steve and Mishel decided to be friends.

Until next year …
